The mastermind of a Hong Kong syndicate that stole HK$700,000 ($89,760) in goods and cash by taking advantage of loopholes in a credit card company's procedures has been arrested.

The syndicate apparently obtained personal information by methods such as stealing mail and buying items stolen by pickpockets. Police said that by using salary documents from a bogus company, they obtained access to 36 credit cards from Aeon Credit Service (Asia) and used them to make purchases and withdraw cash.

Aeon said it will review its procedures. Police warned people to be cautious when they're asked to reveal personal information in street surveys or lucky drawings.
