A fengshui geomancy class introduced by a high school in Guangdong Province is proving popular among its students but has been dismissed as "superstitious" by some locals.

The "Fengshui geography" class was instigated by teacher Yang Bo in September at the Foshan No 2 High School. Fengshui means location of a house or tomb, supposed to have influence on the fortune of a family.

More than 300 students signed up for the class, which aims to teach students about China's fengshui culture.

With no formal fengshui textbooks, Yang collects materials and information for the class every day.

Some local residents have complained to the school that the class is misguiding students and teaching them to be superstitious. But the school's principal said he supports the new class and its teacher.
