The Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council on Friday extended its sympathy to Shaw Hsiao-ling, wife of Taichung Mayor Jason C. Hu, who was injured in a car crash.

"If needed, the mainland will provide all necessary medical assistance," the office's spokesperson said.

"It is gratifying to know she is on the mend and we wish her a speedy recovery."

The couple and two aides were injured in a car crash on November 18 as they were returning to Taichung after supporting the Kuomintang Party opposition candidate Huang Chun-ying at an election rally.

Huang is campaigning for mayor in the southern city of Kaosiung.

Hu suffered slight injuries to his head and hands, but Shaw was thrown from the car and trapped under the overturned vehicle, according to local media.
