Folk artists perform as 340 Taiwanese disciples of Mazu arrive at Heping
Harbor in Xiamen, South China's Fujian Province September 24, 2006. The
disciples will worship at Mayu temple on Meizhou Island in Putian city. A total
of 7000 Taiwanese will attend the event on September 25, which is the largest of
its kind in recent years. Mazu, whose real name was Lin Mo was known as the
Goddess of the sea. She was born in the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) in Fujian, and
unfortunately died at the age of 28. During her lifetime, Lin offered medical
services to fellow islanders. With her weather forecasting ability, Lin saved
lives of many fishermen from the menace of typhoons. Mazu Temple has become a
tie linking the mainland and Taiwan. [Newsphoto]
