The Shanghai High Court has consented to a request by the Russian government to extradite Russian citizen surnamed Mihainovic.

This is the first time Shanghai has carried out an extradition case.

On January 11th, 2005, Mihainovic murdered another foreigner on the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines-owned ship ˇ°DD Leader,ˇ± which was docked at the port of Shanghai at the time.

In violation of Russian law, charges were brought against Mihainovic by the government of his motherland.

But the suspect made a plea, saying that his motive was the humiliation he suffered at the hands of the victim.

He asked that, since the murder occurred on a ship belonging to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, he be tried by that Caribbean country.

After deliberations, the Shanghai court has refused his request and has announced that it will send him back to be tried by the Russian government.

The judgment will take effect after permission is obtained from the Supreme People's Court of China.
