actor-singer Andy Lau admitted that he has been a Hepatitis B virus carrier
since childhood, domestic media reported today.
Invited as an ambassador by the Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention
and Control, Lau said he goes to the hospital for checkups every three to six
months and strictly follows his doctor's advice, so he stays healthy.
"I've been diagnosed with two diseases since childhood -- hereditary high
cholesterol and Hepatitis B. Luckily, I have a family doctor to take care of
me," Lau said.
He also filmed a movie with Chinese director Tian Zhuangzhuang to promote
Hepatitis control and prevention, which will be released on media from
September. He will also collect more funds for the foundation.
China's Ministry of Health published a five-year plan earlier this year to
protect newborns and other groups who are vulnerable to the Hepatitis B virus,
which is being carried by 120 million Chinese.
The plan said, by 2010 the proportion of Hepatitis B virus carriers among all
children below the age of five will be less than 1 percent, while the ratio
among all citizens in the country should be less than 7 percent. Among all the
carriers, 20 million should have constant medical treatment, according to the
Ministry of Health.
