BEIJING - The official death toll in China from Typhoon Saomai rose by 11 to 330, after the discovery of more bodies in the devastated fishing communities of Fuding city.

A total of 241 people had been confirmed dead in the southeastern province of Fujian, with 213 of those victims in Fuding, Xinhua news agency quoted local officials as saying Friday.

The death toll in neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces remained at 87 and two, respectively, Xinhua said.

The number of deaths from Saomai stood at 319 on Wednesday, the last time official figures were given.

Saomai, the strongest typhoon to hit China in 50 years, made landfall on Thursday last week.

Saomai was the eighth typhoon of the summer to hit China, with the storms leaving hundreds, if not thousands, of people dead or missing.

Typhoon Prapiroon, which made landfall on August 3, killed at least 80 people and Tropical Storm Bilis, which hit on July 14, claimed at least 600 lives.
