One injured in Karaoke club fire

A Karaoke bar on the top floor of an office building in Putuo District caught fire yesterday afternoon, injuring one person and causing an undisclosed amount of damage.

The fire authorities said they were still investigating the cause of the blaze that broke out at 2:48 p.m..

Karaoke bar employee Liu Jie received burns on one shoulder and arm. He allegedly smashed a window in an attempt to escape the blaze.

Liu, 28, was rescued by firemen and rushed to Ruijin Hospital. Doctors said he was out of danger.

The fifth-floor karaoke bar was not open when the fire started.

The first to third floors in the building belong to a Paradise Electronics' outlet. The fourth floor is a fitness club.

According to a statement by the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, the fire was brought under control at 3:33pm and was extinguished at 3:48pm.

Flames did not spread outside the bar and traffic was not affected, the bureau said.

The director, surnamed Gong, of the Paradise Electronics' outlet said the store received water damage and may not be able to open for a few days.
