Banks refuse to change temple's coins into notes

Updated: 2006-07-31 08:53

Monks from a temple in Yangzhou of Jiangsu Province have been running short of money although several million coins have piled up mountain-high in the temple's storehouse.

Coins with a face value of 2 fen (0.02 US cents) lie piled up 2 metres high and 4 metres long. The 4 million coins are valued at 80,000 yuan (US$9,864).

The monks visited many local banks and asked to change them into big denomination bank notes. After two months, one bank agreed to help out by accepting coins worth 10,000-yuan (US$1,233).
