Wen cautious about problems in economic growth (AP) Updated: 2006-07-17 10:49
Premier Wen Jiabao has instructed officials to watch for possible problems
caused by China's double-digit economic growth, reflecting fears of a possible
overheating despite efforts to cool the boom.
"Leaders of all regions must maintain a clear mind to predict problems that
can emerge and their sources," state radio quoted Wen as saying Sunday during a
visit to a farm village. "We need to prevent unhealthy and unstable situations
and the imbalances that can occur during fast economic development to prevent
major ups and downs in the economy."
The government is expected to release figures on Tuesday showing the economy
grew by up to 10.9 percent in the first six months of the year -- more than two
percentage points above the official target.
The government has warned repeatedly that excessively fast growth could
ignite inflation and cause financial problems.
Regulators have raised interest rates, ordered banks to
tighten lending standards and taken other steps to cool growth, but experts say
it isn't clear whether they are taking effect.
