Governor of China's biggest coal production province explained his moves to
cope with the deteriorating environment on May 11.
Yu Youjun talked about his ambitious blueprint before a group of
China's Internet media journalists who are invited to his province to help
promote the province's image.
According to Yu, the province will invest billions yuan each year in
environment protection.
One of the biggest move the government decided to take is to plant trees
along with railways, highways and road connecting major provincial cities. The
specific plan set rules for how many lines of trees each section of roads is
required to plant.
Yu promised to raise the ratio of one per cent each year. "By the year of
2010, the percentage will reach to 18 per cent from current 13 per cent," Yu
said.
Another project will support the building or central heating factories in
middle and small cities in the province. Dusts from private heating stoves are
considered the biggest pollutants during winter seasons, Yu said.
While the government is seeking legislative means to limit the polluting
emission of big factories, such as iron and power plants. "We'll be very tough
on shutting those who cannot reach legal emitting standards."
