Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved as
state-level deveopment zone on November 29th 1984. The zone has a population
of and a developed area of 6 square
kilometers.
Geographical
Location
Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone
(ZETDZ) is located in the center of Zhanjiang City in the southernmost part of
the Chinese mainland and in the southwest of Guangdong Province. Situated in the
intersection of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan provinces, ZETDZ faces the South
China Sea to the east, the Beibu Bay (Gulf of Tonkin) to the west, and looks
across the sea at the Hainan Island. Zhanjiang acts as a main gateway to the
high seas for Southwest China and the foreign trade port enjoying the shortest
voyage from the Chinese mainland to South Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania and the
Middle East. It is only 3 to 4 kilometers away from the Zhanjiang Harbor,
railway station and the airport.
Climate
Endowed with a typical tropical and subtropical
marine climate, Zhanjiang is neither extremely cold in winter nor extremely hot
in summer. The average yearly temperature is 23 centigrade, with an average
annual rainfall of 1,500 milimeters.
Communication and
Transportation
Harbor
Zhanjiang Port is one of
the 10 hub ports in China, operating five loading areas with 24 berths each
having a 10,000-ton or above capacity, including a 50,000-ton class dock for oil
tankers. With an annual handling capacity of 20 million tons, the Port has
commercial routes to more than 100 countries and regions.
Airport
There are more than 20 air routes to Beijing,
Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, with over 100 flights per month.
Landway
The Litang-Zhanjiang and Sanshui-Maoming Railways
connect Zhanjiang with the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, a trunk line of the
country. And the Guangzhou-Haikou Railway is scheduled to start operation soon.
Sections of the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Expressway have opened to traffic.
Natural Resources
Facing the seas on three sides with a
long coastline of 1,556 kilometers, Zhanjiang is rich in tropical and
subtropical resources and marine resources. There are proven deposits of 25
varieties of minerals. The annual yields of sea pearls rank the first throughout
the country. Zhanjiang also has the biggest eucalyptus and sisal plantations in
China. It is a major producer of cane sugar, peanuts, rubber, subtropical fruits
like mango and pineapple, various fishes, and marine products like shrimps,
crabs, abalones and oysters. Meanwhile Zhanjiang has plenty of tourist resources
such as seashores, sand beaches, scenic spots and tourist resorts etc.
Human Resources
Zhanjiang City has a population of 6.3
million, and in town there are 5 universities and colleges, 43 secondary
technical schools, and more than 300 research institutions. Residents holding
college and above degrees account for about 10 per cent of the urban
population.
Industrial Structure
An industrial structure with special
paper making, electric appliances, telecom equipment, bioengineering, building
machines and petrochemicals as the core has basically been shaped.
Investment Priorities
The zone gives priority to
high-tech industries and encouraged areas and projects include the information
industry, new building materials, new generation of household electric
appliances, electronic information and multimedia, electronic components,
electromechanical integration products, technology-intensive electromechanical
products, communication equipment and devices, laser technology, marine
biological technologies, new types of pharmaceuticals, modern office articles
and equipment, low-polluting refined chemicals, chemical and biological
reagents.
