Huang Ming, Board Chairman of the Himin Group and Vice-President for Industry of the International Solar Energy Society, talks about the concept of a "micro-emission city", and the role solar power have to play in the construction of a low carbon city.

Host: What's your definition of a low-carbon city?

Huang Ming (Huang): I prefer the concept of a micro-emission city. A place which has micro-emissions means that the emission of dust, carbon dioxide, polluted water, garbage, and all of these kinds of emissions will be very low. In terms of the definition of the words, "micro" means even less than "low" and "emission" encompasses more than just carbon. The term is more practical, and more suitable for Chinese daily life and Chinese cities.

This strategy means in a city or in a community, all the emissions will be lowered by 10 percent. That's the bottom line. And when this goal is accomplished, you can imagine the whole country, the whole world will be much cleaner and much safer, and more beautiful, and all the problems such as energy crises, a lack of resources, pollution and climate change could be solved by this micro-emission strategy.

Host: Firstly, what role does the development of solar power have to play in the construction of a low carbon city? Secondly, how can it benefit people and what does it mean for the sustainable development of the economy?

Huang: Theoretically, 50 percent of conventional energy will be substituted for solar energy, and the cost, in 10 years, will be much lower than for conventional energy.

Host: How can it benefit people, and what does it mean for the sustainable development of our economy?

Huang: When half of all energy comes from solar power, I think our daily lives will become much more comfortable.

Because, you know, when we talk about solar cooling or solar heating, we need very good energy saving buildings. The temperature in the room will be more balanced, and more steady, than what you get with conventional energy and heating. Also the air in the room will be cleaner. The cost of living will be much lower. The future will be more reliable.

Solar energy's contribution to the sustainable development of the economy and to daily life will be very obvious. You know, solar energy is abundant and infinite, and will never run out like petroleum or other conventional energy. The world will be cleaner, beautiful, and our life will be richer and more comfortable.
