Apple launches iPad in Chinese mainland

After waiting eight months, Apple fans will finally be able to get their hands on an iPad in China, as the company officially launches its era-defining product in the Chinese mainland on Sept 17.

WIFI models of the iPad will be available at the Apple stores in Sanlitun, Beijing, and Pudong, Shanghai, as well as some authorized resellers. The prices are 3,988 yuan ($592) for the 16GB model, 4,788 yuan for the 32GB and 5,588 yuan for the 64GB.

However, the WIFI + 3G models are still not available in China.[Full story]

China Unicom takes orders for iPhone 4

China's major telecommunication operator China Unicom on Sept 17 began taking pre-orders for Apple's iPhone 4 in China. Users have to pay 5,880 yuan ($875) for the 16GB version of the iPhone 4 and 6,999 yuan ($1,042) for the 32GB version to get the iPhone 4 and two-year service package services with China Unicom, according to a statement posted on China Unicom's website.[Full story]

Apple 'stunned' to find iPhones show too many bars

Apple Inc said Friday that it was "stunned" to find that its iPhones have for years been using a "totally wrong" formula to determine how many bars of signal strength they are getting.

Apple said that's the reason behind widespread complaints from users that the latest model, iPhone 4, can show a sudden plunge in signal strength when they hold it in a way that covers a small black strip on one edge of the phone. Apple Inc on Friday said it will give iPhone 4 users free protective cases to address the smartphone's signal problem.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement at a press conference held at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Media reports of Apple's iPhone 4's reception-challenged antenna appear to be hurting gray-market sales and affecting prices of the device in China.

The price of the smuggled US version iPhone 4 in China's gray market dropped by about 70 percent from 20,000 yuan to 6000 yuan within the last month as antenna-related problems surfaced in the media.
