Number of MICE events held in Macao drops 11% in Q3

The number of MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) events held in Macao was 310 in the third quarter of 2009, decreasing by 11 percent over the previous quarter, according to the figures released Friday by its Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Of the MICE events, 289 were meetings/conferences while 21 were exhibitions, with the total number of participants/attendees soared by 2.8 times from the second quarter to 217,241 in the period, the DSEC figures indicated.

Average duration of the MICE events increased from 1.8 days in the previous quarter to 2.0 days in the third quarter, of which the average duration of exhibitions and meetings/conferences were 3.5 days and 1.9 days respectively.

As regards to the subject of those MICE events, the majority focused on commerce, trade and management (122), tourism and culture (48) and education and training (40). Meanwhile, most of the events were corporate meetings (160), association meetings (54) , according to the DSEC.

In the first three quarters of 2009, a total of 1,040 MICE events were held in Macao, with an average duration of two days, attracting 428,528 participants/attendees, the DSEC said.
