Record ocean heat in 2025: a deepening climate challenge

In 2025, global ocean warming continued, with oceans in the upper 2,000 meters storing more heat than ever before. This increase by 23 zettajoules compared to 2024 is enough for an electric car to circle Earth's equator a trillion times.

Persistent ocean warming has had profound impacts on marine ecosystems and human society, increasing marine heatwaves and coral bleaching risks, and threatening low-lying coastal areas and infrastructure.
