Colombian political commentator Fernando Munoz Bernal has accused the United States of becoming "the real pirates of the Caribbean" when speaking of the US invasion of Venezuela and the forcible seizure of its president and his wife.

In an interview with China Daily's Zhao Manfeng, Bernal cited the recent US seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker and extrajudicial actions in international waters as examples of modern piracy. He argues the US uses labels like "narco-state" to justify illegal interventions, bypassing international law and its own Congress.

"The only reason they didn't call it a war is that they didn't have to go through Congress," Bernal stated, referring to the recent military strike on Venezuela.

He warns this resurgence of the Monroe Doctrine, combined with a "Trump corollary", threatens all of Latin America, noting recent US threats against Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

"They won't stop until they've gotten control of all Latin America," he said.
