A Chinese patient with high-level paralysis has successfully used brain-machine interface technology to perform tasks — controlling a power wheelchair and directing a robotic dog to retrieve deliveries — with his thoughts. The patient received implants of the BMI system, developed jointly by the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a corporate partner, in June. With such interactions with the real world, the patient in his 30s achieves levels of self-care, employment, and social engagement previously unattainable.
