Senior Xinjiang official under investigation

Chen Weijun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region committee and executive vice-chairman of the regional government, is under disciplinary review and supervisory investigation for suspected serious violations of Party discipline and national laws, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision announced on Sunday.

Chen, 59, a native of Zhejiang province, joined the Party in 1985 and began working in 1986. For many years, he worked in Zhejiang, with previous posts including mayor and Party chief of Huzhou, Party chief of Wenzhou, vice-governor of Zhejiang, and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee.

In 2021, Chen was transferred to Xinjiang, serving as a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region committee and executive vice-chairman of the regional government until the investigation.

According to the regional government website, in his capacity as a regional leader, Chen attended a work conference related to water conservancy, which was held in Urumqi on Nov 21.
