Beijing on Wednesday urged Washington to abandon its development and deployment of a global missile defense system at an early date, and take concrete actions to enhance strategic trust among major countries and safeguard global strategic stability.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning made the remarks after US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the "Golden Dome", a proposed multi-layer missile defensive system.

Mao told a regular news briefing that the Golden Dome explicitly calls for a significant expansion of outer space combat capabilities, including the development and deployment of orbital interception systems.

It violates the principle of the peaceful use of outer space as advocated by the Outer Space Treaty and will exacerbate the weaponization of outer space and the risk of arms races, undermining the international security and arms control architecture, she added.

Mao expressed China's serious concern that the US, in pursuing the "America First" policy and seeking absolute security for itself, violates the principle that no country's security should come at the expense of others, a move that harms global strategic balance and stability.
