China's railway network is projected to see travel surge during the May Day holiday, with the network expected to handle 144 million passenger trips from Tuesday to May 6, according to the China State Railway Group, the national railway operator, on Tuesday.
The figure marks a 4.9 percent increase year-on-year, with the peak expected on Thursday.
Based on data from the ticket booking system 12306 platform, major departure and arrival cities include Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Xi'an, Nanjing, and Zhengzhou. Popular routes such as Beijing–Shanghai, Xi'an–Chengdu, Beijing–Hohhot, Nanning–Guangzhou, Beijing–Shenyang, and Shenzhen–Hong Kong are experiencing especially concentrated demand.
International connectivity is being strengthened. High-speed cross-border trains between Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, as well as international passenger services on the China-Laos, China-Mongolia, and China-Russia lines, are running to facilitate outbound travel and cross-border shopping and tourism.
