Officials to attend dialogue in Indonesia

Chinese officials went to Jakarta on Monday for the first Senior Officials' Meeting of the China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said. As agreed between China and Indonesia, Vice-Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Zhang Baoqun, deputy director of the Office for International Military Cooperation of the Central Military Commission, would lead the delegation to Jakarta. During the meeting, the two sides are expected to exchange views on China-Indonesia relations and international and regional issues of mutual interest. Launched last year, the dialogue is the first 2+2 ministerial dialogue set up between China and other countries.

Kagame sworn in as president for 4th term

Rwanda's President-elect Paul Kagame was sworn in on Sunday as president for the fourth term, in a ceremony marked by pomp and color at the Amahoro Stadium in the capital Kigali. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Faustin Ntezilyayo at an inauguration ceremony attended by thousands of Rwandans, as well as heads of state and government, heads of international and regional organizations, and dozens of senior government officials from across Africa. In his speech, Kagame described the ceremony as a day of renewal and gratitude. "I can only begin by thanking all Rwandans for putting your trust and confidence in me. It is an honor to serve as your president for another term," he said. Kagame won the July 15 election with 99.18 percent of the vote, according to the National Electoral Commission.

Migrant arrivals hit new single-day high

More than 700 migrants in small boats crossed the English Channel to Britain on Sunday, the highest number on a single day since Prime Minister Keir Starmer took power vowing to tackle people smugglers. Two migrants who attempted the crossing died, French authorities said earlier, taking the number of people losing their lives on the dangerous sea journey to 25 since the start of the year. Some 703 people arrived on Sunday on 11 boats, the Interior Ministry said.
