21-year-old driver detained after fatal hit-and-run in Beijing
A 21-year-old man surnamed Gao, was involved in a series of hit-and-run incidents in Beijing on Tuesday evening, which resulted in one death and several injuries, according to Beijing Police's statement on Wednesday.
The first collision occurred at 7:45 pm on Tuesday at the intersection of Zhangzizhong Road, where Gao, driving a minivan, ran a red light and collided with an electric bicycle.
He then fled the scene and hit another electric bicycle while attempting to escape.
A minute later, due to reckless driving, he collided with several electric bicycles waiting at a red light at the intersection of Kuanjie Road.
As a result, several individuals were injured, and one person died. One individual sustained severe injuries but is currently in stable condition, while 12 others remain hospitalized for treatment, with four already discharged, the statement said.
Gao has been detained on suspicion of committing a traffic offense, and authorities are managing the aftermath of the accidents and ensuring due process.
