Power supplier initiates new mode for green electricity generation

Amid its move in green transition, the State Grid, a State-owned enterprise and the world’s largest utility, is expanding photovoltaic power to generate cleaner electricity and help the economic lifeline.

In Binzhou, a prefecture-level city of Shandong province, the State Grid’s Zhanhua District Power Supply Co has started a three-pronged mode of "photovoltaic power generation + agricultural breeding + battery-induced electricity" to widen low-carbon power generation.

According to Jia Shuyu from State Grid Zhanhua District Power Supply Co, through the joint work of her unit and the local government in recent years, this mode of "yang (using the sun) + yang (breeding) + dian (electricity)" has been selected as a national excellent-practice case, waiting to be popularized nationwide.

The State Grid shoulders a dual task of safeguarding the nation’s energy security as well as its economic lifeline as a mighty power supplier.

The China Enterprise Federation released a notice on Jan 15 on excellent practice cases for green and low-carbon development of enterprises in 2023, announcing that the State Grid Zhanhua District Power Supply Co’s practice of building the three-dimensional mode of "yang+yang+dian" has been included as an effort to balance the local electricity chain and the sustainable development chain in agriculture, Jia said.

Song Zhongzheng, Jia’s colleague, said the State Grid Zhanhua District Power Supply Co and the local government has launched a Guangfu Industrial Integration Demonstration Park in Binzhou’s Zhanhua district, which boasts abundant solar energy resources with its vast land areas and sparse population. The district has many unused roofs and land area suitable for building distributed photovoltaic power stations, which will be conducive to adjusting its energy structure and helping achieve its low-carbon goals.

The model of "yang+yang+dian" means that the photovoltaic power is generated on the greenhouses, which cover agricultural produce underneath, and that the photovoltaic power is then converged onto a step-up transformer for connection to the local power grid. It has been learned that the step-up transformer is linked to the energy storage unit, which is connected to a charging station and mobile battery storage. All these are part of its module of new-energy grid connection.
