The island is one of the most concentrated nesting places for sea turtles in the South China Sea. In 2015, a turtle protection center was established on the island, focusing on the rescue and care of the animals.
Li Yupei, deputy director of the marine protection zone management bureau of Sansha , said the center's staff patrols the islands and reefs to make sure the areas are clean and that the turtles are safe.
"If we find an injured turtle, we'll take it in and provide medical attention," he said.
