WASHINGTON - China's Zheng Qinwen failed to reach the quarterfinals at the San Diego Open as she lost to top-ranked Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 on Thursday.

Zheng, who had lost to Camila Osorio 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the final round of qualifying but made the main draw as the lucky loser, advanced to the second round after Garbine Muguruza retired at 5-0 down in the first set on Tuesday.

20-year-old Zheng broke Swiatek first in the deciding set, before dropping six consecutive games to give the top seed her 61st victory on the WTA tour this season.

"Qinwen, she has a different game style because she's playing topspin on her forehand and the ball is flying pretty high," Swiatek said.

"I wasn't expecting to have this kind of good experience so soon in my career," said the 21-year-old Pole, who has claimed six titles in 2022. Swiatek will next face Coco Gauff of the United States in a rematch of this year's French Open final.
