Deng Huilin, former deputy mayor of Southwest China's Chongqing, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for taking bribes, the Intermediate People's Court of Baoding in Hebei province announced on Wednesday.

According to the trial, Deng, who was also head of the city's public security bureau, was given a 4-million-yuan ($575,242) fine as part of the penalty. His illegal gains from bribery and the interest it generated, were recovered and turned over to the state treasury.

Investigation shows, between 1999 and 2020, Deng has sought illegitimate gains of a total of 42.67 million yuan ($6.05 million) by taking his former positions in Hubei province and Chongqing to assist others in business operations, acquiring license plates and job adjustments.

The court believes that the amount of bribes Deng had accepted were extremely huge and the circumstances of his crime were especially serious. However, considering that he had given a truthful account of the offense, showed confession and repentance, and being cooperative in returning all his illegal gains, he was given a mitigated punishment.
