A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday voiced strong opposition against the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan for its attempt to seek independence by "constitutional amendment".

Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks after the DPP submitted a draft amendment plan to the island's "legislature", which includes lowering the threshold for a "constitutional amendment".

Zhu said the mainland is closely following the relevant developments and firmly opposes any attempt of seeking "Taiwan independence" by amending a "constitution".

Despite resolute opposition and stern warnings from various parties, the DPP continues such attempts for its own gains and will suffer the consequences, she said.

Zhu urged all responsible political parties and visionary people on the island to expose the DPP's plot and take concrete action to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and the well-being of the Taiwan people.

She called on Taiwan compatriots to be on high alert, consciously oppose and resist any attempt to amend the "constitution" for independence, and avoid being hijacked to the lost cause of "Taiwan independence" by the DPP.
