Shanghai Marathon ranked most influential sporting event in the city

The Shanghai Marathon and League of Legends World Championship (S10) were the most influential sporting competitions in 2020, according to the Shanghai Sport Events Impact Assessment Report released on Tuesday.

According to the report, which was conducted by the Shanghai Administration of Sports and the Shanghai University of Sport, the top ranked Shanghai Marathon scored 941 points out of 1,000, while the League of Legends World Championship (S10) was ranked second with 926 points. The 2020 Giro d'Italia Ride Like A Pro Yangtze River Delta Open was ranked the third with 795 points.

The Shanghai Marathon was also ranked as the most professional event while the League of Legends World Championship (S10) received the most attention.

According to the sports bureau, the 41 international and domestic sports events held in Shanghai last year were evaluated based on 48 factors.

"The successful hosting of these events last year shows the fine management ability of the city and has become an important part of the construction of a healthy and world-famous sports city," said Xu Bin, director of Shanghai Administration of Sports.

"We will further improve the quality and pattern of sports events, optimize the spectator experience and expand the participation and effect of the events so that they can promote the image of the city, industrial development, and fitness, and accelerate the construction of a world-class city of international sports events," Xu added.

Huang Haiyan, a professor at Shanghai University of Sport as well as one of the contributors of the report, pointed out that being meticulous, innovative, and collaborative are the three major characteristics required to hold sports events in Shanghai.
