The number of fitness clubs and stores across the nation decreased by 11.1 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to a national fitness industry data report that was released on Sunday at the 2021 FIBO China exhibition in Shanghai.

The report explained that the decrease to 44,300 fitness clubs and stores by the end of 2020 was mainly caused by COVID-19.

On the other hand, the pandemic has amplified the enthusiasm for sports and fitness, according to the report, which noted that the number of people participating in fitness activities in China increased from 68.12 million in 2019 to 70.29 million in 2020, with the fitness population penetration rate reaching 5.02 percent.

"In the past few years, an increasing number of commercial fitness equipment has been designed for home applications and outfitted with smart technology, especially during the epidemic, and this has resulted in the family fitness equipment market growing rapidly both at home and abroad," said Ren Hairong, managing director of Active Lifestyle's Shanghai branch.

According to Wang Jian, representative of the intelligent fitness brand Onelap, the sales of the company's home-based spin bikes have doubled during the epidemic.

"I think the successful hosting of FIBO this year has set a benchmark and an image for the industry, as well as brought confidence to people engaged in the industry as well. I'm confident about the market," Ren said.

Held by Reed Sinopharm Exhibitions, the three-day FIBO China exhibition covers 40,000 square meters and features nearly 500 domestic and international fitness brands including Cybex, Monster Guardians, and Maia Active.

The event has five exhibition sections for fitness and health, facilities and services, nutritional food, fitness fashion, and beautiful life.
