Old copies of renowned newspapers and magazines featured in new exhibition
An exhibition featuring over 80 pages of Chinese and foreign newspapers and magazines published since the late 17th century is being held at Shanghai Library Bibliotheca Zi-Ka-Wei in Xuhui district till April 9.
"The selected newspapers, most of which are original copies, provide a glimpse into several major events in world history, including the news of mankind's first moon landing in 1969, especially for the young generation," said its curator Zhang Lifen, a professor from the school of journalism at Fudan University.
Visitors will also get the chance to read the official journal of the British government London Gazette which was published in 1675, the inaugural issue of Financial Times in 1888, and French fashion magazine Mode de Paris from the mid-19th century.
According to Zhang, several pages of key publications in Shanghai in 1921, the year of the founding of the Communist Party of China, are also on display to mark the upcoming celebrations of the Party's 100th anniversary in July.
The collection also includes The China Medical Missionary Journal, one of the earliest medical professional publications which was established in 1887 in the city, and the revolutionary magazine titled The New Youth, which was founded in 1915 to promote science, democracy, and vernacular Chinese literature.
