Migrant workers in Guangdong province, who choose to stay at their workplace in the province during this year's Spring Festival, will receive special necessities or online shopping vouchers, according to Guangdong Federation of Trade Unions.

Labor unions across Guangdong, home to millions of migrant workers, will allocate at least 180,000 vouchers worth 26 million yuan ($4 million) to migrant workers who stay in the province during the Spring Festival holiday from Feb 11 to 17, in a bid to ease the travel rush and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Migrant workers in the express, food delivery and environmental sanitation sectors will be given goods to keep warm, such as scarfs and gloves.

Cultural and sports activities will also be held for migrant workers during the holiday, according to the local trade union federation.

"I will not go back to my hometown in Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, this year because of the travel rush and worries about spreading the coronavirus," said Wu Lifang, who has been a delivery worker for five years in Guangzhou, Guangdong.

Yuan Qilan, a sanitation worker, from Chongqing in Southwest China, who works in areas near the Guangzhou Railway Station, said she would stay in Guangzhou for the Spring Festival holiday.

"There will a huge passenger flow in the railway station. So I will stay and continue to work during the holiday," she said.
