The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the top industry regulator in China, said it will step up the push to help build an open and innovative ecosystem in China for green computing in the cloud data center infrastructure.

Ren Aiguang, deputy director of the department of electronic information at the MIIT, said computing power is productivity, and advanced computing has become the cornerstone of economic development and the engine of an intelligent society.

Efforts are needed to accelerate the construction of an industrial ecosystem for green computing, Ren said.

Green computing chiefly refers to processors based on ARM chip architecture, a chip design which is well-known for efficiency and relatively low power consumption. ARM-based chips have already been widely used in smartphones, and now companies are working to apply such ARM-based processors to power servers for cloud data center infrastructure.

Mei Hong, general director of the Green Computing Consortium, a Beijing-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting an open and innovative ecosystem for green computing, said the organization has already completed the formulation of multiple standards such as green computing servers and evaluation specifications.

In the future, the alliance will focus on accelerating the formation of a green computing standards system, and promote the standardization, industrialization and application iteration of the core and key technologies of the green computing industry, said Mei, who is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
