Remains of Chinese martyrs to be returned by South Korea on Sunday
South Korea will hand over to China remains and belongings of some members of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army who died during the 1950-53 Korean War and were buried in South Korea, China's Ministry of Veterans Affairs said on Wednesday.
It said the handover will take place on Sunday in South Korea, adding that remains of 599 Chinese soldiers have been transferred to China since 2014.
South Korea will continue recovering Chinese soldiers' remains and handing them over to China. The two sides will strengthen cooperation in this regard, the statement said.
Nearly 200,000 members of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army died on the Korean Peninsula during the Korean War.
Twenty years ago, South Korea started recovering remains of soldiers who died in the Korean War. A special unit was established by the South Korean army in 2003 to take charge of the recovery.
