The Potala Palace, a UNESCO world heritage site, launched its first livestream on Sunday, attracting nearly 1 million viewers for a one-hour cloud-based show. The video has since been viewed more than 1 million times.

The cloud tour of the 1,388-year-old palace, located in Lhasa, capital city of the Tibet autonomous region, was led by two tour guides and livestreamed on Taobao.

It featured the palace's golden roofs, which are not accessible to the public, and can only be seen from a distance.

Jondan, director of the Potala Palace administrative office, said livestreaming with an interpreter helps people get a clear idea of the basic information, crafts and protection efforts associated with the golden roofs.
