Flamengo win South American 'Super Cup'
RIO DE JANEIRO -- Flamengo secured their first Recopa Sudamericana title by beating Independiente del Valle 3-0 on Wednesday to complete a 5-2 aggregate victory.
Gabriel Barbosa put the Brazilian side ahead in the 19th minute but they were reduced to 10 men shortly after when Willian Arao was shown a straight red card for scything down Beder Caicedo.
However, the hosts continued to dominate and midfielder Gerson added two second-half goals to send most of the 70,000 fans at the Maracana stadium into a frenzy.
The Ecuadorian outfit also finished the match with 10 players after Alejandro Cabeza was dismissed for an ugly challenge on Leo Pereira.
Flamengo earned a place in the Recopa Sudamericana decider - South America's equivalent of the European Super Cup - by winning last year's Copa Libertadores.
Independiente del Valle's secured a place as reigning champions of the second-tier Copa Sudamericana.
