In traditional Chinese culture, the mouse often plays the role of "villain". But it does have some positive portrayals. It is said when Confucius visited the Jin State during the Spring and Autumn period (266-316 BC), he saw a mouse saluting them. Confucius thought a mouse in this country was so polite, the people must be too. Therefore, Confucius decided his party did not have to lobby the Jin State, so he left.

Although the legend cannot be verified, some folk customs in different places show their compassion for mice. In Jianghan Plain of Hubei province, families need to steam pancakes and place flowers in the dark for mice to enjoy. Moreover, in order to avoid loud noises, local people avoid pounding rice or grinding noodles so mice can eat calmly.
