BARRANQUILLA, Colombia - Colombian President Ivan Duque on Saturday confirmed the country's interest in co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Ecuador and Peru.

Ecuador President Lenin Moreno revealed plans for the joint candidacy last week after meeting with Duque and Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra during a summit in the southern Colombian city of Leticia.

"He [Moreno] asked me if I agreed to an Andean proposal to host the World Cup and I said that Colombia approved the initiative," Duque told reporters during an event in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla.

Duque said he has asked senior members of his administration to work with the Peruvian and Ecuadorian governments to formalize a request to FIFA.

The proposal faces competition from another South American candidacy comprising Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile.

The 2030 World Cup will be held 100 years after Uruguay won the tournament's inaugural edition as hosts.
