Italian President Sergio Mattarella will decide on possible snap elections on Aug 27, after a new round of talks with parties aimed at solving the crisis triggered by the collapse of the populist government.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned on Aug 20 after blasting Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, accusing him of ending the 14-month-old coalition government and damaging the economy for personal and political interests. He was asked by Mattarella to remain in office as caretaker of current affairs.

The head of state held a first round of talks with leaders of every single party holding seats in parliament, to verify whether there was the political will to forge an alternative majority and form a new government on Aug 21 and 22.

Italy has suffered from very slow economic growth rates in the past three decades. The eurozone's third-largest economy is among the most sluggish performers in the European Union's 19-nation currency bloc.
