New FINA World Cup season kicks off in Tokyo


TOKYO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- With the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju having just ended, the 2019 FINA World Cup season is set to begin in the 2020 Olympic city of Tokyo on Friday.
This weekend's competition will take place over three days, kicking off as the first stop of the first cluster.
About 140 athletes from 28 countries and regions, among them some recently crowned World champions and Olympic medallists, will join this year's series. Hungary's Katinka Hosszu has registered in 14 events.
The Swimming World Cup in Tokyo includes 34 events, 16 per gender and two mixed relays. All the meets will be held in a 50m pool and will be qualifying events for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The FINA World Cup provides a total of over 2.5 million US dollars in prize money.
