Sino-US relations and world order

Le Yucheng, vice-minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China

Le said the development of the past 40 years of Sino-US relations has proved that "united, we stand; divided we fall". He continued by making three points: "First, China is not to be blamed for the troubles the US is facing; second, Using a tariff as threat is not the solution; third, it is stupid to take China as the enemy and the consequence will be disastrous."

Swaine Michael, senior fellow, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, US

Swaine is one of the US scholars who signed an open letter to US President Donald Trump and members of Congress published in Washington Post several days after top leaders of China and the US met on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders' Summit in Japan. The number of the signed writers of the letter has increased from 100 to more than 500, according to Swaine.

"The increasing number of letter writers shows a repeated and wide consensus in the US that people in scholarly, foreign policy, military or business (fields), think it is not right take China as an enemy and confront China," Swaine said. He hoped those in the US who support extremist policies to China will think twice because of the letter and Chinese people will understand not all US people are extreme to China.
