US artist Frank Stella, 83, who pioneered the art movements that have defined the art landscape since the late 1940s with his minimalist, painterly abstract works, is showcasing his works at American Master, Frank Stella: Polish Villages, at Lévy Gorvy's gallery space in Hong Kong.

The exhibition, which runs through July 27 has works from his Polish Village series produced between 1970 and 1974.

The works made up of corrugated cardboards, felt, paint and wood show an inspiration from wooden synagogues, built between the 17th and 19th century in eastern Poland, which were destroyed by the Nazis during WW II.

The symmetrical patterns and restricted palette convey a visual balance and also a tension between the flat surface and three-dimensional forms.
