MADRID -- Former Real Madrid and Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho has been sentenced to one year in prison and a fine estimated to be around 2.2 million euros for tax evasion.

Mourinho accepted the sentence, which centered on the evasion of 3.3 million euros related to image rights in his tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, when he was coaching Real Madrid.

He was fined 60 percent of the money and handed a six-month prison sentence for each of the cases, but won't have to serve time in prison as his offense is suspended due to the sentence being under two years.

Mourinho acknowledged the offenses before the court in Madrid in a hearing which lasted just a few minutes.

He had previously paid a fine of 1.14 million euros in 2015 for an administrative offense related to the same case.

January saw former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo fined 18.8 million euros by a Spanish court and sentenced to 23 months in prison after he accepted similar charges.

Other current and former Real Madrid players, such as Xabi Alonso, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Iker Casillas, Angel Di Maria, and Ricardo Carvalho have all had legal problems related to tax in recent years.
