No reported injuries after icebreaker's collision with Antarctic iceberg
No injuries were reported after the Chinese icebreaker Xue Long collided at 10:47 am Saturday with an iceberg in the Amundsen Sea on the outskirts of the Antarctic continent, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources late Monday. The vessel is now sailing properly.
Xue Long was on its 35th expedition to the Antarctic and was caught in a thick fog when the collision took place, the ministry said on its website. It was traveling at a speed of about 5.56 kilometers per hour.
Damage was detected at the mast at the vessel's front, and at part of its bulwark, it said. Other equipment on board, including the power and the telecommunication systems, are working properly.
The ministry said it had organized repairs and will make follow-up scientific exploration plans.
