The Wa ethnic group in southwest China’s Yunnan Province is celebrating the annual “Monihei” Carnival as part of the May Day holiday. “Monihei” literally means “make you black.” During the revelry, people smear each other with a kind of “mud” made of bark and local herbs. In Wa tradition, the muddier you get, the more you will be blessed.
