Zeiss to upgrade UV protection products

The vision care and consumer products business unit of German optical giant Zeiss registered a total sales revenue of 1.1 billion euros ($1.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2016/2017, while the group reported a turnover of 5.3 billion euros.
According to Matthias Metz, president and CEO of Zeiss Vision Care, the positive financial results can be attributed to the company's unremitting investments in research and development. The company spent about 12 percent of its annual turnover on R&D work for the past fiscal year, which is much higher than the 5 percent industry average.
For 2018, Zeiss will upgrade its UV protection products. At present, the common industry standard only goes to 380 nanometers for UV protection. But 40 percent of all the UV exposure comes in the range of 380 to 400 nanometers.
Regarding this, Zeiss will provide lenses with full UV protection, covering the range from 380 to 400 nanometers from the spring of this year. It will also provide all-clear lenses with full UV protection, which will make the company the first one providing such products worldwide.
