The vice editor-in-chief of the Hebei Youth Daily was assaulted and badly injured late Saturday near her residence in Shijiazhuang, the capital of North China's Hebei province, qianlong.com reported.

Le Qian suffered serious head injuries after being attacked from behind by a man wielding a brick. She had just returned home at around 8pm Saturday and was waiting for an elevator when the assault occurred.

Le was immediately taken to hospital, with blood pouring around her neck from the serious head injury. The suspect ran away after a neighbor opened a door following her screams for help

"I have no relatives and few social contacts in Shijiazhuang. When I was beaten, all I heard is 'dare you report that', I guess it's some piece in the paper that offended someone," Le said.

The hotline of Hebei Youth Daily had received a threatening call on Nov 6, but the female caller refused to name which piece of news she was cursing about.

The Hebei police have set up a special board to investigate the case, according to reports.
