During the 2008 Olympic Games you may come across foreigners driving cars with local license plates. That's because a recent announcement now allows any overseas athlete or official to apply for a temporary driving license.

Wang Shilin, vice director with the International Affairs Department of The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), said foreign citizens who have a short-stay visa in China, can apply for a three-month driving license.

All athletes and officials with interest in the Games-driving license need to in advance put it in for BOCOG, Wang stressed while presenting a report on the preparation of the Beijing Games to the Asian Olympic Council in Kuwait.

But he didn't clarify how far in advance an athlete or official has to submit the application.
