Montenegro, which split from Serbia last year, is on course to become the 204th member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after winning provisional recognition Wednesday from the body's executive board.

The board said Montenegro fulfills all conditions and criteria for acceptance as a national Olympic committee.

Final approval is considered a formality at the full IOC assembly in Guatemala City in July.

Montenegro has already been accepted by a number of sporting bodies, including soccer and volleyball.
