Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it has arrested senior lieutenant Daviv Aliyev, who served in the Southern Military district, on allegations of high treason.

The FSB alleged that Aliyev collected sensitive information about the district's army units and establishments on orders of the Georgian special service.

The FSB also arrested Aliyev's mother who allegedly had been planning to relay the classified information collected by her son during her trip to Georgia.

Georgian authorities in December arrested six people who allegedly staged several explosions in Tbilisi and had been spying for Russia.

Russia and Georgia have been at odds since 2008 when they fought a brief war that resulted in Moscow's recognition of two Georgian breakaway regions as independent states.
